Already bought new: Fuel tank In tank lift pump External fuel pump (Bosch) Fuel accumulator (Bosch) Fuel Filter (Bosch) Rebuilt fuel distributor. (CIS Flowtech) Stainless injector lines Fuel injectors (Bosch) Radiator (Nissens)
Something basic with an indirect injection diesel engine and Bosch VE fuel pump. Then it can be run on any old oil that’s remaining long after the petrol has turned bad. Including engine oil from abandoned vehicle sumps. Peugeot 405 estate would be ideal.
That rattle at around 2k rpm in the CP3 area is usually the coupler or pump itself starting to wear. The CP3 on the 6.7L is gear-driven and there’s no adjustment or ‘re-phasing’ you can do — it’s either good or it’s not. A little gear whine is normal, but a hard rattle means the internal plungers/bearings are coming apart. I would plan for a replacement rather than trying to nurse it along. Stick with a quality new or Bosch reman; the cheap Delphi/Rockauto pumps have a spotty track record and a failed pump will send metal into the fuel system. Also inspect the harmonic balancer and flex plate bolts, since they can mimic pump noise. If you’re not comfortable diagnosing, have a diesel shop listen before you throw parts at it.
I had a 1981 Volvo (in 2003). It had a B21 engine and a 4 speed + OD standard transmission. I daily drove it and it was fine. The Bosch fuel injection was very complicated, and when the fuel pump went, I happily changed the tank fuel pump, not realizing there was another fuel pump mounted under the drivers door.
Its been a while and I have replaced the tank with a Mk3 tank and intank pump, got to throw out the warning again this does make a fair bit of noise so be prepared.
Took great care of my Passat. Recommended oil change interval 10k; I changed every 6k. All oil and fluid changes at the dealership. I only did the filters, spark plugs and serpentine belt.
Problems -
Purge valve has to be replaced at 40k (warranty)
Control arms at 45k (warranty) + alignment
Fuel pump at 62k ($1600)
Entire cooling system replacement at 64k ($3100)
I believe hot weather and cheap plastic causing more harm to this car.
I learned that when my generic $125 fuel pump turned into a $750 tow and a $150 U-Haul trailer rental and 3 hours on the side of the road waiting for U-Haul to fix their blown out trailer tire. And then a new $400 Bosch fuel pump that I should have bought in the first place.
