I've had my 6mt G80 M3 for 3 years now and still love it. Yes, the manual in a Cayman or Blackwing is better, but it is still a good transmission and better than the older BMW manuals I've had.

I ultimately went with the manual and I'm really happy. Yes, I wish I could launch it off the line (more easily) and obviously the automatic is a bit quicker when you're ripping through the gears with the extra torque and fast shift, but the manual makes it so much fun. Even driving calmly, it's just so engaging.
I’ve got an F30 340i with a 6spd. It’s pretty fun I can’t lie. The shift throw is pretty short, previous owner said it was a stock setup but I haven’t verified. Sometimes, it’s a little tough to slip it into gear, a little toooo notchy.
I enjoy the manual in my daily 435i. It is a 2016 so it does not have the auto rev matching. Luckily for me a lot of the fun of the manual is rev matching, heel/toe, etc. so I’m not feeling I’m missing out.
I had an f80 manual. I didn't find it vague. It was no 911 but short throws and pretty tight.
I have an S2000 as well as F87 M2. M2 isn't bad at all, but S2000 is the gold standard. I ordered a G87 manual; no way it ruins anything.
My M2 felt like a commuter spec 2 series unless you were at 11/10ths. It would have been boring on the street if not for the manual trans.
BMW manuals are mid.
