Duralast loaded struts from autozone, put em on my dads 200k volkswagen passat, ride height is fine and they ride good, all my shops around town buy em and dont seem to have any issue at all
Best Strut assembly for Volkswagen Passat
The rear hatch started to randomly pause while opening and closing, I would have to give it a hand assist to open and close it. I lubricated the struts and so far so good, it has been operating smoothly.
Im running Koni FSDs on my passat which is the identical platform. And they are a great set up.
At about 75000 miles, I replaced my rear struts with Bilstein HD struts. Let me tell you, 90% of my handling woes were the rear struts being dead. I haven't replaced the fronts yet.
I went with the TC's. The car corners as flat as I want it to be at speed, and the ride is still somewhat comfortable.
Since you mention winter...I would stay away from the STR.T line. I bought them a few years ago for my Passat and after the first winter the things started to rust. The problem is the paint; it's garbage - I don't think they were primed, just sprayed orange. Maybe it's a cost-savings area but after the first winter the paint was flaking all over and after the second there was little paint left and heavy surface rust (big time pitting) everywhere.
