I run Valvoline restore & protect because 2x 5 qt jugs fits my 4 qt Prius and 6 qt Maverick perfectly and I run it on the Prius which has stopped oil burning from the low tension rings.
Best Engine oil for Toyota Prius
Oil burning around 150k, although switching to Valvoline Restore & Protect I've basically eliminated it. Seems to be related to carbon buildup in the low tension rings.
While I didn't own a 2018 (mine was 2013 hybrid -> 2022 prime), here's my short list:
Electric gives a huge increase in torque from 10-50mph
Mechanic told me the oil came out barely darker than it went in on the last change. ~80% electric miles
My prius went from burning a quart every 1000 miles to almost no consumption after 2 changes with r and p. The oil was so disgustingly dirty the first change which i did at 3k instead of 5k. It definitely cleans your engine out.
Mijn prius uit 2005 krijgt niks anders. Ik rijd er al mee van 220k tot nu 397k. Still going strong!
The best performing oil for cold starts is probably Pennzoil platinum full synthetic if your particular prius uses 0w-20. It is made from syn gas, and is particularly thin.
For comparison, i got 6,000 miles out of Pennzoil platinum vs royal purple, with which i would get 5,000 miles prior to the oil changing color and about a 1 to 2 percent dip in fuel economy. Regardless of the wear additives, Pennzoil platinum lasts longer, again likely due to the cold start performance and the way the hybrid drivetrain works.
I personally use mobile1 with a Lucas oil stabilizer. Oil still looks pretty clean when I change it.
I use mobil1 or castrol full synth 0W-20 for prius engines below 200k and 0W-30 for those above it. More than 30k mi now so far so good. I like the castrol better bec my engines sounds much quieter vs m1.
I would run Castrol over Pennzoil. Coming from personal experience, Pennzoil is junk.
On the Gen 2 Prius that have been several reports of Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic consuming oil much quicker, me included.
