OEM Subaru Thermostat

Apparently something about plastic parts which is wild for a thermostat anyways, also the cvts aren't a problem really just service and drain fill your fluid 30k miles.

Pros: honors warrantys
Cons: plastic thermostat parts
Vehicle: Subaru
Mileage: 48280 km

OEM Subaru Thermostat

OEM thermostat ALWAYS. Coming from the older EJ world, I've had numerous problems with aftermarket thermostats. Again cheap insurance using OEM.

Pros: cheap insurance
Cons: problems with aftermarket

I will save you the effort that if you DIY, just go to a dealer or whoever sells OEM parts and get the Subaru thermostat. Aftermarket ones are hit and miss and the OEM ones aren't that expensive anyway, its like 30 bucks for a thermostat and gasket.

Pros: OEM good value
Cons: Aftermarket hit and miss
Vehicle: Subaru Outback

Use a Subaru thermostat ... some aftermarkets aren't the correct shape (length) and don't open sufficiently despite technically "fitting".

Pros: correct shape, sufficient opening
Cons: incorrect shape, insufficient opening
Vehicle: Subaru Forester

Had that happen with my 02 Outback. Put in an aftermarket thermostat when I redid the timing chain and it overheated. Replaced it with an OE one (bled it the exact same way, used Subaru coolant straight from the dealer both times) and it went away completely.

Pros: fixed overheating, reliable performance
Vehicle: Subaru Outback

Always use a genuine Subaru thermostat. Think of it this way - $40 for a thermostat shipped to your door is better than putting a new $10 in every 3 months.

Pros: reliable, long-lasting
Cons: frequent failure
Vehicle: Subaru Outback
