A preventative chain job on a RWD N47 is closer to 1200 quid (using a genuine IWIS kit) not 4k. It is relatively cheap long term security if you plan on keeping the car.

I just did my timing chain a week or so ago, buy the kit from edgautosport they have really good quality oem parts. Just make sure you buy an additional friction washer for the exhaust camshaft because the kit only comes with one when you need two.

Cheapest non-VW timing chain kit I can find is around $300, OEM parts are around $600.

I'm using a BGA kit with OEM tensioner. Deleted the balanceshafts. Is on a B204/B205 hybrid but great kit for B2X4, B2X5 engines!

I had the same issue with my N18 engined Countryman S. Turned out the timing chain guides had started to disintegrate and plastic pieces floating around and stopping the oil flow into the oil pump. Car had new timing chain kit and new oil pump
